Open Belote

General Description

This version of Open Belote is a game for two, which is played with 32 cards from 7 to Ace. The Players participate in a certain pre-planned number of games or games with certain scores with a pre-defined prize unit.

Objective

Collect the border point first՝ (501 (51), 1001 (101) or 2001 (201)) or win a defined number of games (1, 3 or 5)։

Game kick off

Open Belote is very similar to Simple Belote, but there are some key differences:

  • Open Belote is played by two players.
  • The way of dealing, the cards is different. One of the players is assigned to be the dealer. The dealer lays out 2 sets of 4 cards for each player: one set of 8 cards for the dealer and one set for the non-dealer.
  • The dealer then repeats the process, and each player is dealt more 4 faced up cards for the top row.
  • After the dealing, the game begins. The non-dealer now has the option to start the game by choosing a trump card. If the non-dealer refuses, the dealer must choose a trump card. If the dealer refuses as well, each player is dealt 4 more faced up cards. The choice to choose a trump card then reverts to the non-dealer. If he refuses again, the initiative passes to the dealer, who must choose a trump card.
  • Then the game begins and the non-dealer makes the first move. When the move is done, the faced down card under the card which was used for the move, is being presented and becomes a faced up card.
  • Regardless of who chooses a trump card, the dealer’s opponent makes the move. The opponent should make a move with a similar card, if there is one, and if not, with a trump card. If there are no similar cards or trump cards, the Player can make a move with any other card. If the played card is a trump card and there is a higher trump card, it is necessary to cover it with that, and if it is lower, it is possible to make a move with any trump card.
  • In the first hand, the Player can announce a combination except for Belote. In order to announce combinations, it is necessary to use F2 button or the Menu. If the combination is not announced, it is not counted.

Usage of Combinations

Having more cards in the combination makes the combination stronger (maximum five cards). The higher the last card of the combination is, the higher the whole combination is. In case of having the same combination with the same high card, the priority gives either to the combination with trump cards or to the player who announces his/her combination first.

Before making a move, the owner of the combination should declare it in order to get it considered. After the first move, no other announcements will be valid. The points of Belote combination are counted automatically, regardless of the game flow.

Declaration

In Open Belote, the possibility of getting one or more combinations may grow with each move, so you have to think carefully about what moves to make, what cards to open, etc. A Tierce (20 points) may be leveled-up into a fifty (50 points) and then, that fifty may be leveled up into a hundred (100 points).
For example, if you have the Queen (Q), Jack (J), and a ten (10) of trumps, you can declare a tierce and earn 20 points. If you then open the King (K) or the nine (9) of the same suit, you can get a fifty with Belote/Rebelote and then maybe even a hundred (100). Therefore, it is important to consider all the cards in order to get the most out of the declarations.

Points Calculation
  • The sum of all the card points is 162 (16).
  • The point calculation is done after the end of each round.
  • After playing the last hand, the points of the cards are being calculated by the system automatically by adding also the points of the combinations.
  • The player who takes the last hand receives 10 points.
  • The points of each Player are added to the points collected during the previous games and registered in the table (each line of the table shows the result of the current game after each round).
  • The winner is being determined according to the sum of the points collected from the cards and combinations. If the Player has taken a trump card and hasn’t collected more points than his/her opponent, the points of the cards and combinations move to the opponent, and the given player loses. If the Player hasn’t taken any points, the situation is called “Kaput”, 21 points are added to the opponent’s score.
  • If the Player who takes the trump card has more points than the opponent, he/she is considered the winner of the game in that round, and the calculation is done in the following way: the points taken from the opponent’s card are subtracted from the 162 total points (without combinations) and the difference is written in the score (if there were combinations, there are also counted).
  • In Open Belote in order not to be ‘’Kaput’’, the taken hand should also give at least a point.
